In 1979, Hanoi Medical University officially established its second campus at Hai Phong University after several years of sending medical students there for practical training. By 1985, this campus evolved into a branch of Haiphong Medical University under the administration of Hanoi Medical University.
In 1999, based on the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 06/1999/QĐ-TTg, Hai Phong Medical University was officially formed from the existing branch campus. Later, on November 11, 2013, the Prime Minister issued Resolution No. 2153/QD-TTg, renaming the institution as Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy, placing it under the direction of the Ministry of Health.
The university’s mission is to grow as a leading center for medical and pharmaceutical research and education, to transfer advanced technologies both domestically and internationally, and to train skilled healthcare professionals who meet the growing needs of public health care and protection.
Currently, the university employs more than 700 staff and faculty members, including 500 full-time academic personnel and 200 hospital-based staff. This includes seven professors, 28 associate professors, 77 PhD holders, 180 master’s graduates, 65 specialist-level physicians, and 285 part-time lecturers from major hospitals. Over nearly 40 years of development, the institution has trained more than 10,000 doctors, nurses, and postgraduate professionals who are highly respected across medical facilities nationwide. Since 2015, the university has admitted approximately 950 undergraduate students and 300 postgraduate students each year.
